Anyone see anything wrong with using an adze as a gouge?

Robin asked if there could be any improvements to the bowlmate. Perhaps make the ends a bit longer so you can ride it.
It holds it down very firmly and is a comfortable working position - never stand if you can sit down.
The gouge idea is fine as long as no one tries using a hammer. That idea about making your bowl vise longer may be a good one.
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong at all, I hope to get a nice curved adze when I save up some pennies.Nice work

No I think there's no prob using the adze as a gouge, I'd not considered using a maul though - good idea! On the other hand I like using the adze as an adze to get as fine a finish as poss before using spoke shave/knife and I think it's good practice for hand eye co-ordination to take out those smoothing chips with tiny chops following on each other - just my point of view on it - so long as you can produce good bowls safely who cares?
ReplyDeleteI have seen several videos where Northwestern coastal Native sculptors use their elbow adzes with an additional mallet blow, and also using it more like a hand plane as in the pics here.
